  • How do I breast feed a teething baby?

I feel like I should know how to do this because my son is my second child, but I don't.  My daughter didn't start teething until she was 10 months old.  I was dying to see her with teeth, and everyone told me I was lucky hers were coming in late because I was breastfeeding.  I can probably count on one hand how many times she bit me.  I would say "ouch" really loud, and she'd feel really sorry for me.  She didn't do it again.  She transitioned into sippy cups and that was that.

My son is only 6 months old.  He is growing another tooth and despite my best efforts, he wont stop biting me.  I tried giving him milk in a bottle, but he just wont have it.  He will only drink juice out of the bottle.  I don't want to stop breastfeeding, but his biting is getting worse every day.  When you give him orajel his gag reflex kicks in no matter how little I give him.

    Help.

Well, I don't have an answer since my son decided he only wanted refridgerated bottles after 4 or 5 months of breastfeeding (it was summer...lol). Just wanted to say good luck!!

I removed her every time she bit me, and made her wait a few moments before I put her back on. It took a while, though. She would watch me for a reaction while she was getting ready to chomp down.

It's soothing to be able to gum at something while teething. Have you considered letting him chew on a cold wet wash cloth before nursing sessions? That might ease the pain a bit, and then he'll be more open to nursing in a less painful way.

Have you tried giving him Orajel on one of those infant toothbrushes? The kind that slip over your finger. Keep it in the fridge before you use it, and then spread a little of the gel on the bristles. The cold brush helps immediately, so he wants to chew on it, allowing you to get orajel onto his gums. Worked for us- Becca kept sucking it off anything else we used to apply it.

Another option is the hyland's teething caplets. We haven't used them yet, but I've heard very good things.

Hope that helps! We had a time of things here too, when she started getting into that phase. Good Luck!

That doesn't sound fun. I had no problems even when M started teething. Sounds like bluewingz has some good advice. Hope it helps.

Ugh.  Sounds horrible.  I stopped breastfeeding mine at about 3 1/2 months so I never had that problem.  Good luck!

I feel your pain! My daughter got her first two teeth at 21/2 months. I had planned on breastfeeding her until 12 months at least but at ten months we stopped. She had 8 teeth by then and I was getting bit too many times. Wish I had some kind of advice....

    Good luck!

Ouch! I gave my baby teething tablets. Here's the website to them...http://www.hylands.com/products/teething.php.

Also try this: when he bites push his head towards you. It usually makes them stop and eventually they get tired of this discomfort. Or put him down when he bites and firmly but gently say, "No biting." They love their milk so they will stop biting!

If you can't find something that works, call the La Leche League if you don't have a personal lactation consultant. I'm sure they'll have some suggestions to try.

@bluewingz - those are some great ideas.  i will definitely try them all.

@mamajoyjoy - It's like night and day with the two kids.  They're so different.  My daughter just didn't do those things.  As always, thanks for taking the time to stop by Mamajoyjoy!

@azkzD@xanga - bluewingz gave me lots.  lol thanks for sharing your story though.  if it ever has to come down to taking him off the boob, it helps to know i'm not alone.

@Traci_Ladd@xanga - OOOoo a website I can actually look at!  I love it.  Thanks.  When I read your comment, I almost laughed at myself.  I don't know why I didn't think of a breastfeeding consultant.  I guess I just figured someone in momaroo has to have the answer I'm looking for.  LOL

  • MommyDolce

@imagnolias@xanga - you would let me kick your nephew off the boob.  just picture his sad little face.  mean Auntie Mings.

  • imagnolias@xanga

@MommyDolce - lol. okay fine. poor babyjojo. i'm looking in my nursing skills bag and this one stumped me. i'd have to say, try over the counter teeth sensitizers, being firm but calm "NO BITE", breaking the latch to train him. ummm......and if all else fails, see a specialist. otherwise, tun tun tun tun........bottlefeeding time!!!
